A win for the veterans

SOUTH West Vets’ cricketers put in a match-winning performance at Woorndoo last weekend.

By wd-news

Facing Hamilton, the side won the toss on Sunday and elected to bat.

After losing two early wickets, captain Leigh Graham (34) and Ross McIllveen (33) scored quickly to see the Volcanoes reach 3/83 in the 14th over.

Team-mates Bernie Drake (14no), Peter Dickson (16), Wes Bramwell (9) and Graeme Fischer (7no) also batted well, bringing the Volcanoes to 8/141.

Eager to defend their total, Volcanoes bowlers worked hard at the crease from the first over.

Don Pyke took an early catch off the bowling of Tony Evans to have their opponents 1/10.

Wickets fell steadily for the remainder of the innings, with Hamilton 8/103 after 40 overs.

Leigh Graham (2/18), Ross McIllveen (2/19), Tony Evans (1/11) and Peter Dickson (1/5) all bowled economically and were the wicket-takers.

Many thanks to Woorndoo Cricket Club for hosting the day and supplying a barbecue, and to several South West life members who also attended.

This Sunday the over 60s will return to Woorndoo to take on Ballarat while the over 50s team will play Forest Hill.

The veterans’ cricket sides welcome new players and would be keen to hear from anyone interested.
