SUSPECTED toxic blue-green algae has been detected at Lake Tooliorook near Lismore.
Warning signs have been installed at the popular site and authorities are reminding people to avoid direct contact with the water until the algal bloom disperses.
A Department of Environment, Emergency and Climate Action (DEECA) spokesperson said direct contact with blue-green algae can cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes or itchiness.
“Recreational activities at the lake should be avoided, and this includes swimming, fishing and boating,” the spokesperson said.
“Anyone who comes into contact with water from the lake should immediately wash in fresh water and seek medical advice if they experience any illness.
“Any fish harvested from the lake must have the gills and guts removed prior to cooking.
“DEECA will continue monitoring the lake until the bloom disperses and advise when the lake is safe for use again.”
Contact DEECA on 136 186 to report any potential algal bloom.
