Anzac medal for Merrett

FORMER Cobden Bomber and now Essendon captain Zach Merrett was last week awarded the 2024 Anzac Medal at the MCG.

The traditional AFL Anzac Day clash between the Essendon Bombers and Collingwood Magpies resulted in a drawn game.

But for the experienced Bomber, the day was made even more memorable when he was named the best player on the ground.

Merrett polled 11 from a possible 15 votes, including three best-on-grounds, from five judges.

He finished the day with 31 disposals, 10 contested possessions, eight tackles and six clearances.

Bombers team-mate Andrew McGrath finished second in the count, with seven votes, while Magpie Nick Daicos was third with five.
