AN unbeaten 84 from opener Clinton Baker has given Mortlake its first win of the season, defeating North Warrnambool at Bushfield.

Baker’s knock included 10 boundaries and a six, which was well supported by team-mate Taj Podger who contributed 45 not out.

Earlier in the day, the Eels won the toss and elected to bat but strong performances in the field saw the Cats restrict the home side to 8/140 after 45 overs.

Best of the batters for the Eels were openers Jamie Harry (22) and Bailey Jenkinson (30).

Baker also proved formidable with the ball, finishing his nine overs with the figures of 3-27.

Captain Todd Lamont was also effective at the crease, taking 3-26 off nine while other wickets went to Todd Robertson 1-9 from four and Lachlan Wareham 1-28 off nine.

The Cats will face West Warrnambool at the Mortlake College oval on Saturday.

Mortlake’s division two side went down to Nestles last weekend.

The Cats finished on 10/127 while the visitors made 7/304.

Best with the bat for Mortlake were openers Neil Kelly (37) and Corey Rounds (26).

Division three will start its season campaign this weekend when the team heads to the Harris Street Reserve on Sunday to take on Merrivale.
