CAMPERDOWN Amateur Basketball Association officials are putting the call out for volunteers ahead of the upcoming 2021/22 season.

The association, which did not hold a season last summer, needs a new wave of committee members to take the competition forward as existing officials scale back their commitments.

Major roles including president, vice president, secretary and treasurer need filling but it is in other aspects of the association officials are asking for assistance.

Outgoing president Gary O’Neil said the association is encouraging interested parents or current and past players to consider joining the committee.

“The committee for the last so many years, their situations have changed in terms of work, family matters and their kids have progressed through juniors,” he said.

“We’re looking for a new generation of committee to come through so that basketball can continue (to flourish).

“When everybody hears about a committee, they either get deterred because they think they’re going to get a major role.

“We have got roles to fill but basically it doesn’t mean they are going to get a major role.”

O’Neil said prospective volunteers will be tasked with smaller roles to ease the burden on those holding bigger responsibilities.

“More hands make light work, and those more hands will make it easier for those committee members who have got major roles during the year,” he said.

“The year is basically set-up at the start of the season with the picking of teams and registrations and then the rest of the year continues to flow on pretty well.

“It’s just about knowing we have a number of parents that could assist us during the year if we need them.

“It could be a small role like handing out the tops, opening the front door, coaching, just things like that.”

O’Neil said the association will welcome all volunteers, adding its biggest priority is to teach kids the fundamentals and provide a fun environment.

“We’d love to have parents that have a genuine interest in educating our kids about sport and getting them active and seeing them grow with confidence,” he said.

“Basketball is a great game for kids. It’s eye and hand co-ordination but also every year is a different year in terms of who they play with so mixing (teams).

“But the aim of the association with our juniors, winning is not everything, we want every kid to be a part of a team and to learn.

“That’s a major thing we always tell our coaches. It’s not all about winning, it’s equal time and we want them to development no matter their ability.”

The association will hold its annual general meeting next Tuesday at the Camperdown Stadium starting at 7pm.

“We have our AGM this Tuesday coming, please turn up and don’t feel that there is going to be a commitment on you,” O’Neil said.

“If anyone wants to know what we really would like they can give me a ring and I can explain what we’re after.

“If we can get an extra 10 people that’s great.”

Those seeking more information about joining the Camperdown Amateur Basketball Association committee or volunteering can contact Gary O’Neil on 0419 302 436.
