SIMPSON and district residents will be better prepared in case of a fire thanks to a new initiative.
Simpson and District Community Centre joined forces with the Cobden and District Community Bank to produce 1000 emergency bags to be distributed in the wider community.
Centre co-ordinator Debra Smith said the ‘Be Prepared Bag’ would act as a bit of a prompt for people in an emergency.
“There’s a list of things you might need in an emergency on one side and the other one is a list of emergency contact numbers,” she said.
“They have CFA information as well as kids’ colouring tools inside.
“We’re pretty happy with how they came up.”
Mrs Smith said she submitted an application with the community bank for funding for the project and was subsequently approved.
“We appreciate the community bank’s support on this project,” she said.
The 1000 emergency bags, which cost close to $3800 to produce, will be distributed as soon as possible to residents in the Simpson, Port Campbell, Timboon and Kennedy’s Creek areas.
Cobden and District Community Bank business development manager Lauren Hester said the bank was pleased to be able to support the project.
“It’s a good idea to support the community and one that we are very happy to support,” she said.
Ms Hester encouraged community groups with ideas to benefit the wider community to apply for grant funding.
“That’s what we’re here for,” she said.
Simpson Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigade captain Paul Parsell said the emergency bags were a positive idea and built on plans in place within the community.
“Sunday Ridge Road residents have got together to organise an alert system,” he said.
“We’re hoping other outer areas can do the same.
“It’s all about being prepared in case of a fire emergency.”
