Bloods come close
A STRONG four-quarter effort has seen the Bloods come within two goals of second-placed South Warrnambool.
A STRONG four-quarter effort has seen the Bloods come within two goals of second-placed South Warrnambool.
In what may have been one of the upsets of the season to date, the ninth placed Bloods put in a solid performance to finish just 11 points down on the siren – 6.8.44 to 7.14.55.
Senior coach Ben Kenna said while it was disappointing not to take the four points away from the skillful South, he was happy with this side’s performance.
“While it was certainly disappointing not to come home with the win, after being well in it all day, I can’t fault the boys’ efforts,” Kenna said.
“South Warrnambool is second on the ladder for a reason so to really take it up to them was satisfying. They had to work hard for the points.”
Terang Mortlake held a handy 20-point lead going into the main break, however, South went out firing in the third term to add three quick goals within almost as many minutes.
“Those three goals early in the third really sealed the win for them,” Kenna said.
“We really had to work extra hard to make up that difference and just couldn’t quite get there in the end."
“But our defensive pressure all over the ground was great and the boys can be pleased with how they played overall.”
Listed among the best for the Bloods were Jarryd Hay, Isaac Kenna, Gus Bourke, Ryley Hutchins Will Kain and Xavier Vickers.
Goals went to Will Kain (3), Jarryd Hay (2) and Jack Lehmann.
In the reserves, Terang Mortlake went down 0.2.2 to 12.19.91.
Best for the Bloods were Jack Aitken, Jake Lee, Matthew McConnell, Bailey Kavenagh and Will Berryman.
Terang Mortlake will take on Cobden in the final round of the home and away season this weekend.
