THE finals hopes of Terang Mortlake’s open netball side took a hit last weekend following a 15 goal defeat at the hands of South Warrnambool.
The Roosters led by five goals at quarter time before doubling their advantage by the main break.
A competitive third term kept the Bloods within reach, however the home side took control in the final 15 minutes to record a 50-35 result.
Jacqui Arundell (18 goals) and Jess Davis (17) shared the workload under the post, while defender Brooke Hoare along with Libby Moloney and Faye Clarke were named in the best.
The Bloods and Roosters are currently part of a three-way battle along with Camperdown for fifth position on the ladder.
The 50-35 loss leaves Terang Mortlake in seventh position, half a game behind South Warrnambool and four points behind the Magpies.
The Bloods face a much easier contest this Saturday against a lowly Portland who was beaten by 31 goals last weekend.
Meanwhile, the Magpies and Roosters will go head-to-head in Camperdown, with a Bloods’ victory likely keeping them within striking distance of a finals berth.
Terang Mortlake recorded a hard fought 39-34 victory in division one netball at Friendly Societies Park.
South Warrnambool led by one goal at the first change before the second quarter turned the match on its head.
The Bloods outscored their opposition 14-4 to establish a nine goal lead at half-time.
The Roosters gradually ate into the margin throughout the second half but were never close enough to seriously challenge for the win.
Linda Clifford (30 goals) took care of the bulk of the scoring, with Kaitlyn Arnott and Jess Baxter also named in the best players.
Terang Mortlake’s division two and three teams both suffered narrow losses.
Division two was beaten 33-28 after trailing by just one goal at half-time, while division three surrendered a three goal quarter time lead to go down 22-21.
It was a mixed bag of results across the junior grades as the 17 and under side fell heavily to an unbeaten South Warrnambool 77-24, the 15 and under side recorded a 25-24 victory, while the
Bloods’ 13 and under side drew 33-all against a side they will likely meet again during finals.
