Bloods win a nail-biter
A CAPTAIN’S goal in the dying seconds of last Sunday’s semi-final has seen Terang Mortlake celebrate a huge come-from-behind win to earn a spot in this weekend’s Hampden League preliminary final.
The Bloods, who at one stage were down by more than 10 goals, thrilled the large crowd at Reid Oval to take the win by just two points over the Warrnambool Blues – ending their finals campaign.
The Blues piled on the goals in the opening term, kicking 9.8, while keeping the Bloods to just two behinds.
A resurgence in the second quarter saw the Bloods regroup and apply pressure on the scoreboard, kicking five goals six while keeping the Blues scoreless for the term.
By the half-time break the Blues had taken a 24-point lead which was extended to 38 points by three-quarter time.
By all accounts the Blues appeared to have taken control of the game heading into the final term but the Bloods fought back – with a stunning final goal in the dying moments from team captain Joe Arundell launching them into this weekend’s preliminary final.
Final scores Terang Mortlake 13.14.92 to Warrnambool 13.12.90.
Best for the Bloods were Xavier Moloney, Darcy Hubbs, Sam Crawley, Scott Carlin, Xavier Vickers and Gus Bourke.
Bourke and Will Kain each contributed three goals to the scoreboard while Joe Arundell added two – with Isaac Kenna, Jacob Moloney, Xavier Moloney and Lewis Taylor kicking one each.
They will now face South Warrnambool in this Saturday’s preliminary final at Port Fairy’s Gardens Oval.
The winner will book a spot in the grand final where they will meet North Warrnambool Eagles.
