COMING off a draw with Port Fairy in round seven, Cobden’s senior footballers were thrilled to get back on the winners’ list last weekend.

The Bombers are now sitting fifth on the Hampden League ladder after Saturday’s 52-point win over Warrnambool and coach Dan Casey couldn’t be happier with this side’s performance.

“The boys just did everything right, and at the right time,” Casey said.

“We changed training up a bit last week and implemented some new strategies and the boys’ carried those out on Saturday which was really pleasing to see.

“We let Port Fairy get a run-on in the final quarter the previous week and they kicked a few quick goals. We worked on how to stem the flow and regain control of the game and I believe the boys did that well against the Blues on Saturday.”

Casey made particular mention of the efforts of Jesse Williamson who kicked eight, captain Jack Hutt who “played really well” in half-back alongside Sam Thow, while Patty Smith also earned the praises of the coach for a strong game in the midfield.

And with nine players still on the injury/unavailability list, Casey said it would certainly be a challenging time for selectors once all players are available.

“With a heap of players still to return, it’s certainly going to be a challenge when naming sides in coming weeks,” he said.

“We’ve got a big game against South this weekend, who are premiership favourites, so it’ll be good to see how we go.

“We’re up for the challenge, so hopefully we can really give South a bit of a shake-up.”

Last Saturday’s win sees the Bombers sitting half a game clear of the sixth-placed Blues, and just half a game behind fourth-placed North Warrnambool.

Final scores on the weekend were Cobden 19.17.121 to Warrnambool 10.9.69.

Best for the Bombers were Jesse Williamson, Jack Hammond, Sam Thow, Paul Pekin, Brody Mahoney and Tarj Anderson.

Williamson had a great day out, booting eight for the Bombers, while Hammond and Ashley Rosolin each kicked two, with singles from Anderson, William Benallack, Louis Cahill, Mahoney, Pekin, Thomas Roberts and Grady Rooke.

Cobden’s reserves also had a good win on the weekend, defeating Warrnambool 8.5.53 to 5.11.41.

Michael Koroneos kicked five for the Bombers and was supported on the board by Harry Darcy, Joshua Hickey and Joe Hutt with a goal each.

Best for the Bombers were Harrison Herschell, Tom Mahony, Mitch Reed, Matt Clarke, Jack Darcy and Koroneos.

Earlier in the day the under 18.5s went down by 13 points to the Blues, 7.4.46 to 9.5.59.

Best for the Bombers were Jesse Wason, Gus Walsh, Noah Sinnott, Isaac McVilly, Noah Penry and Jonty Robertson.
