Cobden’s netballers, led by Open coach Sophie Hinkley, are having another strong season in Hampden League and will again be finals contenders.

With six rounds remaining, the Bombers will face Port Fairy this weekend, followed by Camperdown, ladder leaders South Warrnambool, Portland, North Warrnambool and then Terang Mortlake.

While the round 15 match-up against league powerhouse South will prove a good test for the Bombers, their remaining games should see the Bombers comfortable in the top five.

The fifth-placed Warrnambool challenged the Bombers at Reid Oval last weekend, coming out strongly to take a narrow one goal lead after the opening quarter but the Bombers rallied in the second to be up by three at the main break.

In the second half the Bombers added 32 goals to the scoreboard while the home side was contained to 28, with the final scores 60-53 in favour of the Bombers.

Best for the side were Lara Taylor, Emily Finch and Jaymie Finch.

Cobden’s division one side, currently sitting seventh but just half a game out of the five, went down to the Blues 32-38.

Best players were Ally Jeffery and Maddison Clifford.

Division two saw Cobden defeated by Warrnambool 20-40, leaving them ninth on the ladder.

Anna Hinkley, Jessica Anderson and Eisha Howard were named best on court for the Bombers.

In division three, Cobden (sitting seventh) was defeated 28-33, with Kayla Hunter, Sophie Hickey and Maggie Conheady named best.

Junior results from last weekend:

17 and under – Cobden defeated Warrnambool 27-23. Best: Lila Bennett, Krystal Blain and Claire Blain.

17 and under reserves – Warrnambool defeated Cobden 38-8. Best: Chloe Bridges, Millicent Saunders and Matilda Anderson.

15 and under – Warrnambool defeated Cobden 35-16. Best: Isabella Wain, Hannah Robertson and Sarah Bridges.

15 and under reserves – Cobden lost to Warrnambool 5-41.

13 and under – Cobden defeated Warrnambool 21-6. Best: Maddison Fisher, Courtney Blain and Zaya Howard.

13 and under reserves – Warrnambool defeated Cobden 19-16. Best: Dakoda Baker, Charlotte Dean and Sienna Anderson.

Cobden’s senior football side currently sits just one game out of the five, behind Koroit in fifth.

Last Saturday’s game against the third-placed Warrnambool Blues proved a tough one for the Bombers, going down by 34 points, 15.9.99 to 20.13.133.

Thomas Spokes booted home four goals for the Bombers while Ben Berry added three and both Oliver Darcy and Jesse Williamson contributed two apiece.

Arthur Armstrong, Matthew Kemp, Brody Mahoney and Archie Taylor also added a goal each.

Among the best for the side were Tim Auckland, Thomas Spokes, Paul Pekin, Archie Taylor, Zac Green and Flynn Penry.

The reserves, flying high and sitting second on the ladder, enjoyed a close nine-point win over the Blues, 8.3.51 to 6.6.42.

Joseph Smith, Joe Hutt, Michael Koroneos, Tom Mahony and Lachie Davis were named in the best for the side.

Goal scorers were Koroneos, Blake Mottram and Henry Robertson (two each), Tully Darcy and Joshua Worboys.

Earlier in the day, Cobden’s under 18 footballers went down to the Blues, 6.2.38 to 6.11.47.
