Bombers’ win locks in top five

The Bombers took care of Terang Mortlake 48-39 at Cobden Recreation Reserve, ending the finals aspirations of the much improved Bloods.
The home side broke the game open in the third term following a tight first half which saw scores tied at quarter time.
The competition pacesetters led by just one goal at the main break before establishing a seven goal buffer with one quarter to play following an 11-5 third term.
Cobden held firm in the final quarter to outscore Terang Mortlake 13-11 to remain three games clear on top of the ladder.
Defenders Jessica Wheadon and Nadine McNamara were named best for the Bombers.
Emily Finch continued her form under the post netting 32 goals with support from Molly Hutt (16).
The Bombers will round out the home and away season this Saturday against Camperdown, who sealed their place in the finals with a 37-goal win over Portland last weekend.
In division one, Cobden kept its top five hopes alive courtesy of a 31-28 victory over Terang Mortlake.
The Bombers used a 10-7 fourth quarter to finish the match the stronger of the two sides after much of the opening three terms went goal-for-goal.
Hailey Mahony was named best on court, Sophie Blain and Hannah Anderson also proved valuable while Jordana Bateman (17 goals) did the bulk of the scoring.
Cobden remains sixth on the ladder, tied on points with fifth placed Koroit ahead of round 18.
The Bombers play Camperdown, who has won just one game this season, while the Saints take on Terang Mortlake.
Cobden’s division two side recorded a 45-30 triumph over the eighth placed Bloods.
The Bombers built on their advantage across the opening three terms to lead by 15 goals with one quarter remaining.
Hannah Justin (21 goals), Meghan Spokes and Sarae Hickey were all named among the best.
Cobden enters the last round assured of a double chance.
In other results last weekend, top side Port Fairy drew with third placed Koroit 37-37 as a tight finals series looms.
The Bombers also prevailed in division three action, notching up their ninth win of the season with a 30-22 result.
The home side was best served by Charlotte Quick, Paige Turner and Haylee Davis.
The victory has all but assured Cobden a position in this year’s finals, barring a catastrophe in this weekend’s clash with sixth placed Camperdown.
A fast start proved the catalyst for Cobden’s 42-37 win in 17 and under netball.
The Bombers led by three goals at the first change as the Bloods challenged on numerous occasions but were unable to lead at any change.
At 15 and under level, Cobden gave up a seven goal half-time lead to fall short by one.
Terang Mortlake overran the Bombers throughout the second half, outscoring the hosts 18-10.
Jess Bouchier (22 goals) led the way on the scoreboard, while Grace Taylor and Tayla Hickey also proved valuable.
Cobden’s 13 and under netballers showed plenty of fight despite going down to Terang Mortlake 32-24.
It was a solid performance from the club’s youngest side against the second placed Bloods.
