Bowls season approaches

COBDEN Bowling Club is looking forward to the upcoming season, which is fast approaching.

By wd-news

Midweek pennant will start on Tuesday, October 8 while weekend pennant will start on Saturday, October 12.

There has been a change to Saturday pennant this season, with all divisions having only eight teams.

As a result, Cobden’s division one team has been relegated to division two.

The team will go into the season missing two skippers, with Damien Riches and John Carlin both electing to try their luck in Western Division, playing for Port Fairy.

This has created an opportunity for other players to step up and take on the challenge of filling their roles.

It will be a difficult task for the selectors and possibly take some time before they get the mix right.

Division 3 will be hoping to go one better than last season after finishing runners-up to Colac Lakes in the grand final.

Players will have to be sacrificed to fill the vacancies in division two, however it once again creates opportunities for players to be tried in different positions.

Division four did exceptionally well last season, making the finals series while blooding a number of new players.

As always, the team was raided to fill the upper grades, but it was still able to put up an exceptional result.

Midweek pennant teams will be hoping to consolidate on last season, with both teams having gone up a division by winning the previous year.

Division one did well, ending midfield in a higher standard competition.

Division two plugged away with a number of close losses, and the selectors had their work cut out getting the combinations right.

The experience the players gained during the season can hopefully now be utilised for more success.

Overall there is a lot to look forward to this year.

Spectators are most welcome towatch the teams when Cobden is playing at home and enjoy the atmosphere.
