THE Anglican Parish of Camperdown and Holy Apostles were joined by Parish centres St Mary’s Cobden, St Jude’s Timboon and All Saint’s Terang for a Maundy Thursday meal recently.
The meal, held at the Benedictine Abbey, was an open invitation and hosted 11 people at the table, with 20 people attending the service that followed.
Numbers were limited, but Matthew Jones of the Anglican Parishes of Camperdown and Holy Apostles said there was a lot of interest in the meal.
“The fact that the meal was an open invitation to anyone from the parishes, and guests at the abbey was positive,” he said.
“It was well-attended.
“The reception was very encouraging, particularly for the meal.
“Some churches do a Passover meal, where they do a Jewish-type meal; ours had an explanation of what each of the elements of the meal meant.
“People found the explanations really engaging and were able to engage with the elements of the meal and what those symbols represent for Christians.”
The meal was accompanied by a small speech from Sister Raphael, explaining the symbolism of the food served.
Fr Jones said there was usually only around three or four shared services a year, usually held on the fifth Sunday of a month.
“A lot of the people don’t know each other very well,” he said.
“If they live in Timboon they don’t really know the people from Camperdown, because you tend to stay in your own community.
“It brings different communities together, and it’s lovely.”
