Bridging the gap

MEMBERS of the Terang Bridge Club were dealt a good hand recently with the publication of their booklet ‘Introduction to Bridge’.
Members from across the district, including Mortlake, Caramut and Camperdown, met in Terang last week to celebrate the official launch of the booklet as the club attempts to rebuild following COVID restrictions.
Terang Bridge Club president Harold Eller said the game of Bridge was an excellent means of increasing physical and mental wellbeing, and a great contributor to helping improve social interaction within the community.
“It is also open to a wide range of age groups and is practically independent of any physical limitations the participants may have,” he said.
“Terang Bridge Club tries very hard to encourage and teach new members what can be a very mentally challenging game.
“But COVID pandemic made this virtually impossible.
“However, with a relaxation in restrictions the club has made a determined effort over the last 12 months to make up lost ground.”
The renewed efforts to return included six introductory bridge lessons trialled over six weeks earlier this year.
The lessons were taken by 12 people, five raw beginners and seven current members who felt the need for a refresher course.
The lessons were designed to give maximum experience of playing bridge hands with a minimum of explanatory notes.
Even so the revised lessons in total ran to 64 pages.
Mr Eller said participants spoke very highly of the lessons, and the club was thrilled to launch the booklets for new and current members alike.
“The club was very fortunate and grateful to receive funding for the proposed publication of their “Introduction to Bridge” booklet from Corangamite Shire, Terang and Community Opportunity Shop and Terang and District Co-operative,” he said.
“An approach to Star Printing found them most encouraging about the project, and the booklet is now available and has been distributed to all current members of the club.”
