RACEGOERS flocked to Terang over the weekend to enjoy a bumper day of racing on short notice.

Cancellation of various races across the region, including the Mortlake Cup, saw Racing Victoria announce an additional program for Terang.

A field of eight races, highlighted by the 1800 metre Open Handicap 2022 Bet365 Mortlake Cup, made for a great day of racing according to Terang Racing Club president Shane Scally.

“There was a very good crowd with buck’s parties and Christmas gatherings making a day of it,” he said.

“The racing itself was very good in that the track was a very even track; horses were winning on the inside rail, the middle and coming down the outside, which is indicative of a track giving every horse a chance regardless of where they are on the track.

“We got the meeting on reasonably short notice so it took a lot of work by our ground staff and committee to get everything up to race-day standards.

“The day was a credit to everyone on the committee and our ground staff to get everything to a workable level.”

Mr Scally said the opportunity to host the $50,000 2022 Bet365 Mortlake Cup, and throw support behind Mortlake Racing Club, was a highlight.

The 2022 Mortlake Derby Day was cancelled this year due to heavy rainfall which lashed the state, resulting in the Mortlake track and surroundings retaining water which made the facility unsafe for use.

“Hosting the Mortlake Cup was a highlight,” Mr Scally said.

“The Mortlake Cup was won by a horse called Holster, which is trained at Mornington, so there was a good representation of horses from out of the area.

“Another highlight was the presentation of the Mortlake Cup by a committeeman from Mortlake, so they basically got the ownership of that race to ensure the cup was run this year.

“We were only too happy to have that race so the Mortlake Cup could be run, and give people from Mortlake the chance to come over and have that race as their own.”
