Cameron makes debut as Tigers dominate the court
SIMPSON’S Shelby Cameron has made a strong impression in her A grade over the weekend during the Tigers’ win over Apollo Bay.
The Tigers secured a 67-33 victory over Apollo Bay to keep pace with the top of the ladder.
Simpson got off to a fast start which saw the women carry a nine-point lead in to the first break, which ballooned to 22 by the main break.
The Tigers were able to cruise to a blowout victory off the back of strong performances from Holly Duynhoven, Carol Arndell and Eliza Duynhoven.
Coach Emily Duynhoven said it was a “good win” which she believed the team had needed.
“It’s probably the first game we’ve had a big win,” she said.
“All the other games have been close, so to get a big win is great, especially with three girls out on the weekend due to some sickness and injuries.”
Jessie Harding led the goal scoring with 33 while Eliza Duynhoven added 23 and Emily Duynhoven tacked on 11.
“It was a great game from Paige (Salmon) and Holly (Duynhoven), they have a great bond in defence and compliment each other,” Emily said.
“Jess Harding played a great game in attack, she really too control and settled the side down.
“It was one of the games where all of us shot really well so it was good to see things are starting to happen.”
One of the standout performances came from Cameron, who made her A grade debut after being brought up from the under 17s.
“She stepped up and played absolutely amazing,” Duynhoven said.
“She’s the main shooter in the under 17s but I chucked her out in to a wing attack role and you wouldn’t know it was her first game in A grade.
“She was amazing, and she was so happy to be able to step up.
“It was the perfect game for her to be able to step up and the girls were all saying after the game that she had played great, so this has given her a confidence boost and hopefully we see her play well in the under 17s but she’ll continue to come back through the side because you wouldn’t know that she was new to our side with the way she played.”
The Tigers will face off with Birregurra next week in a clash between fourth and fifth on the ladder, with Simpson eying the fourth spot should they secure victory.
“Birregurra have been on fire the last couple of weeks, some of the games that they have played show they’re tracking really well,” Emily said.
“We’ve known this would be a hard game which would determine if we sit fourth or fifth, so we’ve discussed as a team that we have to come in strong.
“We’ve played some strong sides, we played Souths and went down by six, but I’ve said that’s how we want to play – we can’t afford to start slow because then we’re the ones having to play catch up.
“We know this will be tough and competitive, but with the girls I think if we really dig deep and start to play some four quarters of netball I don’t see why we can’t jump up in to that spot.”
