THERE was no stopping the virtual sunshine beaming from Camperdown College staff and students last Thursday on National R U OK Day as they celebrated from home and on campus.

Dressed in everything yellow, students recognised the importance of starting conversations and asking the people around you “R U OK?”

Principal Cherie Kilpatrick said the feedback from families was they thoroughly enjoyed the day and said the importance of these conversations in students from Year 12 right through to Prep has never been more important.

“The R U OK campaign is a real conversation starter and now more than ever it’s important our students, staff and whole community are aware of the difference simply asking someone R U OK can have,” she said.

“As we were still in lockdown and the majority of students were working from home, the idea that we had the R U OK Day to celebrate as a school community was just fantastic.”

Students took part in a number of activities from home including baking, creating a logo, a guided meditation session and the task of sending in a photo or video for the school compilation which was released that afternoon.

Families within the town limits enjoyed a scavenger hunt prepared by local businesses who were on board with the R U OK campaign and those outside the five kilometre radius were encouraged to make their own scavenger hunt at hometo enjoy.

Perhaps the most important task set for the day was to check in with someone, according to Ms Kilpatrick.

“We encouraged students to reach out and ask someone in their family or community how they’re going,” she said.

“A seemingly small gesture but as this campaign illustrates, a very important one especially in such times of isolation.”
