Camperdown mum raises $15,000 for sick kids

CAMPERDOWN mum of two Jess Lyne’s recent ‘great walk’ along the Great Ocean Road for the Very Special Kids charity has far exceeded her expectations.
While Jess initially aimed to raise close to $10,000, her efforts have resulted in more than $15,000 being donated to paediatric palliative care.
The courageous 36-year-old walked just over 105 kilometres solo from Apollo Bay to the 12 Apostles.
Her five-day journey saw her camp overnight at various locations along the way, overcoming her initial fears of being on her own after dark.
“The weather could not have been more perfect; the last day it poured but I was finished by midday so it didn’t really bother me,” Jess said.
“There was no major hiccups, everything ran pretty smoothly and the scenery and coastline was nothing short of perfection.”
Along her journey Jess saw plenty of kangaroos, koalas and lizards but, “thankfully” not one snake.
“I’ve no doubt they (snakes) saw me but we never crossed paths.”
With two children of her own (aged nine and four), and working as a nurse, Very Special Kids is a charity close to Jess’ heart.
The charity provides holistic palliative care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and tailed support for their families – through life, death and bereavement.
“It’s extremely sad what those children and their families go through but fundraising events like this walk can help them; and if I can help somebody then I’m already winning,” she said
“I was absolutely stoked with the amount raised and overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and messages of support; we are so lucky to live in such a kind and caring community.”
