MORTLAKE’S inaugural women’s cricket side made a big impression on the Warrnambool District competition last weekend.

Playing in front of a home crowd at Farran Oval on Sunday, the Cats won the toss and sent North Warrnambool in to bat.

The innings was short lived, with the visitors restricted to just 59 runs thanks to a strong performance in the field, and straight bowling from the in-form Olivia Campbell who took 2-11 off three overs and

captain-coach Shae De Francesco 2-7 off five.

In reply, the home side needed just 11 overs to surpass the Eels, with openers Campbell (35 not out) and Sarah McMaster (unbeaten on 21) getting the job done.

With win number one under their belts, the Cats will now look forward to taking on Russells Creek at Mack Oval this Sunday.

In round four of the men’s division one competition, Mortlake dropped to 10th following its loss to West Warrnambool last Saturday.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Cats finished the day at 10/185 with captain Todd Lamont top scoring on 36.

Other contributors to the board included Lachlan Wareham (30), Clinton Baker (27) and Isaac Wareham (15).

In reply West Warrnambool reached 4/186 off its 41.3 overs.

Lachlan Wareham was the best of the bowlers for the Cats, taking 3-32 off nine overs, while Lamont also contributed with the ball finishing with figures of 1-29 off seven.

Round five this Saturday will see the Cats at home to Port Fairy.
