Cats in run chase
MORTLAKE cricketers will be eager to chase down Nestle’s 188 runs and hold on to fourth position on the Warrnambool Moyne Cricket Association’s top division ladder this weekend.
Having won the toss last weekend, the Cats sent home side Nestles in to bat.
Some strong bowling from captain Todd Lamont, who finished the day with figures of 4-51 from 25 overs, saw the Cats contain the home side to 10/188 in the 73rd over.
Nestles struggled in front of the wickets, with openers Geoff Williams (14) and Wil Hinkley (12) failing to make any great impact on the scoreboard.
The Cats’ bowlers played a pivotal role on the day, with only 19 extras recorded.
Jack Lehmann and Lachlan Higginson were also effective, with Lehmann taking 1-5 from five overs and Higginson finishing with 1-6 from four.
Other wickets fell for Clinton Baker 1-36 from 12, Chamika Feranando 1-22 from six and Kalhan Sineth 1-23 from eight.
Mortlake began their run chase towards the end of play last Saturday, with opener Stephen Blacker out for a golden duck.
Team-mates Chamika Feranando and Taj Podger remain at the crease, with Feranando currently on three runs from eight deliveries and Taj Podger on two.
In the championship division, Allansford-Panmure won the toss and sent Mortlake in to bat last weekend at DC Farran Oval.
Opener Henry Smith was caught out on nine while Cooper Herry fell lbw on five.
Team captain Mitch Hughes was the side’s leading run scorer on 19 while Riley Kelly made 17 and Brendan Gherashe 16.
Damien Goddard finished the day unbeaten on 11, with Mortlake reaching 10/112 in the 56th over.
Day two this weekend will see the Gators return to the crease at 6/19.
Mortlake bowler Brendan Gherashe had a great day at the crease, taking 6-6 from 10 overs.
