Caution issued to drivers
MOTORISTS have been urged to remain vigilant on roads after a mob of Kangaroos on the road was believed to have caused a truck rollover earlier this month.
The incident happened on the morning of Thursday, May 9.
Port Fairy police Acting Sgt Rob McKinley said the truck hauling a single trailer had been travelling along Connewarren Lane towards Hexham, a few hundred metres passed the Mortlake Power Station, when a mob of Kangaroos jumped out in front of the truck.
“One has jumped out from the left side of the road,” he said.
“Another Kangaroo has come from the right side of the road and made impact, which took out the front right-side tyre.
“The damage resulted in the driver being no longer able to control the truck, and it’s tipped off the right-hand side of the road.”
No injuries were sustained in the incident.
Act Sgt McKinley said the incident was a timely reminder for drivers to exercise caution.
“We implore drivers to drive to the conditions,” he said.
A number of deceased Kangaroos have lined the road in recent months due to collisions with vehicles.
Kangaroos are most active during the periods of dusk and dawn, typically travelling in mobs.
In the event impact with a wildlife is unavoidable, motorists are urged to ‘stay straight and brake’ as swerving can result in the vehicle rolling, colliding with a tree or oncoming traffic.
