CAMPERDOWN Lions Club reported having a productive year in 2021/22 despite restrictions and lockdowns, with around 1000 volunteer hours given to the community.

Outgoing president Jan Smith said fundraising opportunities were impacted during the year.

However, she said as restrictions gradually lifted quite a few activities and fundraising opportunities arose, allowing the club to again provide financial support both locally and nationally.

The Camperdown Cup, FOGO bag deliveries for the Corangamite Shire, catering opportunities, Christmas cake and Lions Mint sales all allowed for fundraising.

Many regular community service activities continued including selling Anzac Day tokens, cooking breakfast and providing lunch on Anzac Day for the RSL, roadside and heritage signs cleaning, assisting at the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal, smoke alarm service for the elderly, and providing meals on the Community Meal roster.

A new service was also added when the Lions Skin Cancer Awareness Van operated screening over two days in January.

School service activities restarted including vision screenings, hosting the Youth of the Year competition, staging the annual Peace Poster competition and providing end of year presentations to three local secondary schools.

Three new members joined during the year but three were also lost due to changed circumstances or moving away.

President Smith congratulated all members for their commitment, readily accepting all challenges during another uncertain year, and thanked them for their friendship and good humour.

Visitors on the night included Corangamite Shire mayor Ruth Gstrein, visiting Lions from Mortlake and Simpson and representatives from Camperdown RSL and Camperdwon Rotary Club.

Cr Gstrein thanked the club members for their “excellent and ongoing contribution to the local community, and assistance provided to the shire”.

Lion Smith is continuing in the role of president for 2022/23.
