Challenging run home for Bombers
COMING off a 51-point win over neighbours Camperdown, Cobden’s senior footballers will face a big test when they come up against top side South Warrnambool this weekend.
With just four home rounds remaining in the Hampden League competition, the run to finals will see the Bombers take on South, bottom side Portland and the second-placed North Warrnambool before finishing the home and away season at Terang against the fourth-placed Bloods.
Last weekend’s victory over Camperdown sees the Bombers currently sitting sixth on the ladder, equal on points but percentage behind Koroit in fifth.
Bomber Christian Koroneos was effective in front of goals on Saturday, booting home four majors for the day, while Ben Berry and Jesse Williamson contributed two each.
Other goal contributors were Joshua Hickey, Brody Mahoney, Paul Pekin and Thomas Spokes.
Among the best were Pekin, Matthew Kemp, Berry, Jack Hammond, Grady Rooke and Christian Koroneos.
Cobden’s reserves are set to play finals, sitting top of the leaderboard but only percentage ahead of their nearest rivals, South Warrnambool.
Round 14 resulted in a percentage boosting win over the Magpies, 14.15.99 to 0.1.1.
Among the best were Tully Darcy, Noah Mounsey, Lachlan Herschell, Ashley Rosolin, Noah Sinnott and Gus Walsh.
Michael Koroneos and Mounsey kicked three goals each, Nicholas Kemp and Joshua Worboys contributed two apiece and Louis Darcy, Herschell, Safari McVilly and Blake Mottram each kicked a goal.
Cobden’s under 18s are currently sixth on the ladder, two games out of the top five after a 93-point loss to the Magpies.
Final scores were Camperdown 13.16.94 to Cobden 0.1.1.
Jonty Robertson, Gus Walsh, Eli Dwyer, Finn Darcy, Edward Delaney and Parker Walsh were best for the team.
Cobden’s open netballers are looking forward to testing themselves against South Warrnambool this weekend in the lead-up to finals.
Senior coach Sophie Hinkley said her side enjoyed the “much needed” 64-40 goal win over Camperdown and was ready for this weekend’s challenge.
“Last time we played South I think we lost by about seven goals; now we have our full side back it will be interesting to see how much we’ve improved and how we go against a quality side like South,” she said.
“It will be another great opportunity to test ourselves, and then we take on Portland, North Warrnambool and Terang Mortlake.
“North will be another challenge but we really need to get the win against either South or North to ensure we stay in the top three.”
