THE Camperdown Uniting Church was a hive of activity as the 14th annual Christmas Community Lunch was held last week.

Some 75 people gathered in the Uniting Church Hall for this year’s lunch with plenty of meat, vegetables and a delicious plum pudding or pavlova for dessert.

The annual meal was a Uniting Church initiative and was a time for people from the community to get together and enjoy a lovely meal, sing carols, catch up and some won door prizes which were all donated.

Church Council chairperson Ros Hayman said the lunch brought people together from all walks of life.

“That is the best thing, to see everyone come together and enjoy a beautiful meal together in such a happy atmosphere and to hear plenty of chatting and people catching up with each other,” she said.

“It is a really joyful celebration – exactly what Christmas should be.

“I especially would like to thank and applaud all the volunteers and groups that make this day happen, and who help with the community lunches right throughout the year. Without the efforts of these groups and people we would not be able to have the community meal on a weekly basis.”

Mrs Hayman said it was pleasing to welcome Corangamite Shire mayor Ruth Gstrein who thanked the volunteers and wished everyone a happy and safe Christmas.

She said the council have been great supporters of the Christmas Lunch and have provided funding over a number of years to enable the community Christmas Lunch to continue.

Mrs Hayman said Woolworths have also been great supporters of the community meal and other Uniting Church initiatives through its Food Waste Program and have also assisted in other ways throughout the year.

“I also would like to especially thank those volunteers who have been involved all through the year. The meals would not happen without the dedication of our co-ordinators Jennine and Stuart Harrison

and their regular volunteer team of Ted, Gwen, and Mary,” she said.

“I wish everyone a peaceful and safe Christmas, especially those who are bereaved, those who are by themselves and those who are missing someone special.

“Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the Christmas Eve Candlelight Carols on December 24 at 8.30 pm.

“There will be no service at the Uniting Church on Christmas Day, but we are joining with the Anglican Church for a Christmas Day service at 9am.”
