LISMORE Derrinallum got its 2023 Mininera League season off to a huge start on the weekend, thumping Moyston Willaura by 166 points.

The Demons led from the first bounce and spent the afternoon adding to the board, extending an 83-point half-time lead to finish on 26.25.181 while restricting the visitors to just 2.3.15.

Demons coach Alec Wiltshire said his side worked hard in the wet conditions and reaped the rewards.

“It was certainly a wet round one but I thought our blokes were impressive in the conditions and I was happy with the result,” Wiltshire said.

“Steven Ryan was particularly good across half-back, gave us plenty of drive and set us up behind the footy and Brad Ward swapped from the backline to the forward line on the weekend and kicked eight goals which was pretty special.”

Wiltshire also made mention of Henry Walsh who, in his first game for the club, gave the Demons first use of the ruck all day and was “very clean and effective all over the ground”.

Along with Ward’s eight majors, other goal kickers included Josh Sanders (7), Jack Atkins (4), Lachie Constable and Jed Millard (two each) and singles to Liam Rigby, Steven Ryan and Ruben Vesikuru.

Best players for the Demons were Steven Ryan, Henry Walsh, Bradley Ward, Hayden Brett, Josh Sanders and Jed Millard.

The reserves also had a great start to the season, enjoying a 125-point win over the Pumas, 19.25.139 to 2.2.14.

Best for the Demons were Lachlan Coutts, Ryan Jeffrey, Travis Tremellen, Jason Torney, Steven Fisher and Lachlan Nelson.

Goals went to Ryan Jeffrey (5), Lachlan Nelson (4), Kelly Brain (3), Matthew Levings (3), Luke Fellows (2), Steven Fisher and Travis Tremellen.

The Demons’ senior netballers enjoyed a clean sweep, winning A grade 54-14, B grade 26-15 and C grade 17-4.

The under 18 team was defeated 11-28 while the 15 and under side enjoyed a one goal victory, 8-7, and the 13 and unders won 3-2.

Round two will see Lismore Derrinallum take on Great Western tomorrow.

Wiltshire said he was looking forward to the contest, believing the Lions had recruited well over the summer and would again give their opposition a close contest.

“Looking at last weekend’s results, where Great Western defeated Penshurst, I’m expecting a good hit-out; it should give us an indication of where we’re at this early stage of the season”.
