A STUDENT-LED ‘All Abilities Netball’ session launched with sweeping success as around two dozen participants converged on Camperdown Stadium last week.
The session was the brainchild of Mercy Regional College students Cali Howells and Ruby Atkins as part of a school project for their Year 8 studies.
Netballers from the Camperdown Football Netball Club loaned their talents to the session, assisting with skills development and tips on developing netballing prowess.
Ruby said the pair was thrilled with the number of budding attendees.
“We’re feeling great about the turnout,” she said.
“We’re excited to have this many kids participating.”
Cali said the session began with introducing the predominantly-younger attendees to the game.
“We started with a skills circuit as a bit of a warm up and then git in to some of the rules and positions,” she said.
After learning the fundamentals, participants donned the bibs and enjoyed a game.
“Our goal was just to teach overall skills which could be put in to the game later,” Ruby said.
Cali said she and Ruby had been working on the project for the better part of the year to ensure the session ticked all the boxes for safety, fun and fitness.
“We’ve been working on this throughout term two, so it’s been a fair while and a lot of work,” Cali said.
“Our teachers had asked which sport our passion was and we’d said netball, so they pushed on what we could do with it.
“That’s when we pitched the idea of launching an all-abilities netball program.
Now we’re up to Term 4 and it’s actually happening.”
Ruby said seeing the success of the session showed the need for an ongoing program which gives kids of all abilities the opportunity to hit the court.
“We hope it is something which can continue,” she said.
“Based on the turnout, I think this could go pretty far.
“Hopefully someone picks it up from here.”
