Close final for Mortlake
MORTLAKE Bowling Club’s division one side put in a gallant grand final effort last weekend to go down by just five shots to City Red, 61-66.
In what was a semi-finals rematch on enemy territory, Mortlake Blue took on City Red at City Memorial Bowls Club on Saturday.
The team started out slow but towards the end had City Red on the ropes.
But an end in bowls can be a lifetime and it certainly felt like it as the last rink played on.
In the end, Mortlake Blue lost to City Red 61-66.
D Grant def. M Solly 21-17, G Draffen def. V Moloney 26-19 and L Johnson lost to B Sheehan 14-30.
A fantastic effort by the guys and the comeback was real for a hot minute.
For now, time to re-assess, regroup and come back bigger and stronger than before later this year.
Last Sunday afternoon, the women’s and mens’ pairs finals were played out and both games were close.
For the women, Val Smith and Sandra Richie played Dianne Robertson and Gert MacDonald.
Despite a slow start by Di and Gert, they caught up to Val and Sandra.
With the score at 12-all on the last end, congratulations to the 2023-24 women’s pairs champions Val Smith and Sandra Richie.
Well played to runners-up Dianne and Gert.
The mens’ pairs final saw Dave McNicoll and Dwayne Dolling face Darren Grant and Colin Goldsworthy.
The game started as a one-sided affair, with Darren and Colin jumping out to an early sizeable lead.
Undeterred, Dave and Dwayne fought to claw back the deficit, despite a few dead ends along the way.
After 15 ends, scores were all locked up at 13-all so an extra end was played.
Congratulations to the 2023-24 mens’ pairs champions Dave McNicoll and Dwayne Dolling and well played Darren and Colin.
This was a fantastic match that could have gone either way.
The club’s Tuesday social pennant team has been quite busy in the last fortnight.
The Mortlake side played Camperdown Black in the semi-final a fortnight ago, but the results didn’t make the newspaper in time.
Here are the results:
Mortlake defeated Timboon at Cobden 42-39.
D Murray lost to J Clover 20-21 and M Heard def. N Robb 22-18.
Last Tuesday, Mortlake played Camperdown Black at Cobden and won 37-35.
D Murray drew with S Adeny 20-all and M Heard def. F Salmon 17-15.
Congratulations to the 2023-24 Tuesday social pennant premiers Don Murray, Peter Palmer, Ian MacDonald, Max Heard, Alan Puzey and Kevin Johnson.
That wraps up the pennant season for midweek, weekend and social pennant for 2023-24 and members now look towards club championships.
A few reminders this week:
Mixed pairs matches that do not have a bye should be played as soon as possible to allow bye matches to be played in a timely manner.
Round one matches should be played by this Saturday, not Sunday (as the green will be closed on Sunday).
The Westvic Tyres Shadwell Classic tournament is on this Labour Day Monday, March 13.
Everyone is welcome to watch some live bowls action from clubs in the district and as far as Robe, SA.
Next week we will have news from the club championships and a wrap-up from the Classic.
