THE Terang IGA Co-op made a generous donation this week, with a portion of Anzac biscuits sold over Anzac Day going to the Terang Returned and Services League (RSL) sub-branch.
The Terang IGA Co-op launched a concept to donate 50 cents from each pack of Anzac biscuits sold during the Anzac Day period and raised a total of $300.
Terang IGA Co-op chief executive officer Kevin Ford said the concept stemmed from a desire to support veterans and the great work the RSL does locally.
“We were talking about just how many biscuits we were making, and I knew we had a special price on them so I suggested we donate a portion to the Terang RSL,” he said.
“It’s an appropriate thing to do and the team thought it was a good idea.”
A total of 220 packets of Anzac biscuitswere sold over the Anzac Day period, which Mr Ford said proved popular to satisfy appetites and support a worthy cause.
“It’s almost nature. This is something we should support, and making the donation through a percentage of the Anzac biscuits is a bit of fun,” he said.
“Everybody is enjoying what they’re getting. It’s a win-win.”
Terang RSL president Terry Fidge said he was “blown away” with the continued support from the community through the Anzac Day period.
“The community has been getting behind us,” he said.
“For the community, for what it has done, we will be forever grateful."
“We thank the Terang Co-op for coming up with this initiative."
“I’ve never heard of it before so when you get people in the community getting together like this, it’s a good thing for the town.”
Terang RSL secretary Pam Bell said the support of the community through fundraising initiatives would help to preserve the history of the region’s military service.
“The whole community has been wonderful, from the shops which had our badges to the attendance on Anzac Day,” she said.
“It shows the Terang Co-op is doing things right, and when you get things right the town and the community will be there for you."
“They’re supporting local and that’s one thing life has taught us: support your local.”
Terang IGA Co-op fresh department manager Melissa Hoey congratulated staff on their dedication to keep up with the demand for the iconic Australian treat.
“The secret to a great Anzac biscuit is they are made with love,” she said.
