At a special gathering, community members were invited to sit down and enjoy freshly made scones along with tea and coffee while marking the momentous milestone.

Cobden CWA president Netty Hose thanked the community for supporting the event, describing the turnout as “fantastic”.

“We’re grateful for the support,” she said.

“The Cobden community is just so supportive of anything like this.”

Mrs Hose said it was an honour to have some of the younger set ladies in attendance on the day including Doreen Sullivan who has been with the group for 73 years, Lorraine Oates 62 years and Margaret Hinkley 53 years.

“We are very proud to reach the age of 90 years and we greatly appreciate being part of the Cobden community,” she said.

“A big thank you to Dawn Robertson for making the cake and Barb Porter for decorating it.”

The Cobden CWA began on December 8 in 1933 with a meeting of the younger set which saw Freda Barnett as president, Bessie Simkin as secretary and Joan Crook as treasurer.

Corangamite Shire mayor Kate Makin attended the belated birthday celebrations describing the group as a “beacon of strength, support and community spirit”.

“In a world that constantly evolves, the CWA has remained a steadfast presence, embodying the values of compassion, unity and service,” she said.

“For 90 years, its members have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of those around them, extending a helping hand to those in need and advocating for positive change in our communities.”

Cr Makin said the CWA was more than just an organisation.

“It’s a family. It’s a place where friendships are forged, where skills are shared, and where memories are made,” she said.

“Over the past nine decades, countless bonds have been formed within these walls, binding us together in a common purpose and a shared commitment to making a difference.

“So here’s to 90 years of service, of sisterhood, and of strength.”
