THE Bombers came out firing against Camperdown on Saturday evening, starting strongly and holding off a second-half challenge from the Magpies to win 14.17 (101) to 11.9 (75).

Cobden went into the first break 11 points ahead, then capitalised on their lead in the second quarter, kicking four goals to Camperdown’s one to lead 9.6 (60) to 4.5 (29) at half-time.

Camperdown rallied as the light faded, outscoring Cobden by a point in the third and by four points in the last, as Cobden missed a raft of goal-scoring opportunities.

But the Bombers’ consistency won out in the end, as the first-half deficit proved too difficult for the Magpies to overcome.

Louis Cahil, Paul Pekin, Louis Robertson and Grady Rooke all kicked two goals each among 10 goal-scorers, while Thomas Spokes, Matthew Kemp, Harrison Herschell, Josh Hickey, Robertson and Oliver Darcy were all named in the best.

Bombers coach Dan Casey said he was very happy to see his side get a win on the board after two tough matches to open the season.

“We worked on a few areas we didn’t do so well in against South Warrnambool and Portland, so it was good to see those boxes ticked early in the game,” he said.

“With our young group it was important to show them that if we do these things well, we’ll get results.

“The most pleasing thing was Camperdown got a bit of a run on in the second half and we were able to swing momentum back our way, we were really pleased they were able to do that.”

Casey said his midfield lifted against Camperdown and were the difference this week.

“Against South, they really beat us in the second quarter through the midfield,” he said.

“It was the same in the third against Portland, and it really cost us the game."

“We put it back on our midfielders to work harder and get those centre clearances, which they did, and the results speak for themselves on the scoreboard.”

Casey said his side would be looking to do the same in the match against Port Fairy this weekend.

“It’d be nice to go 2-2 before we get into the top sides again, but it’s not going to be an easy game just because they’re on the bottom of the ladder,” he said.

“They’re like us, they’re a really young side, just starting to get some players back, so we need to do what we do well and nullify their game.

“We know none of our games this year will be easy, we’re trying to get it into our players that every game’s going to be hard.”

In other Hampden League matches, Warrnambool beat North Warrnambool, Koroit trounced Terang Mortlake by 173 points, Port Fairy lost at home to South Warrnambool, and Portland won in Hamilton.

Cobden also had a win on the court, beating Camperdown 63-40.

The Bombers outscored the Magpies through every quarter, going into the half-time break ahead by 31 goals to 25, dominating through the second half to win by 23 goals.

Sophie Blain was named best on court, while Molly Hutt and Emily Finch were also in the votes with 24 and 39 goals, respectively.

In other Hampden netball games, Koroit defeated Terang Mortlake 55-40, Port Fairy lost to South Warrnambool, Warrnambool won against North Warrnambool, and Hamilton lost at home to Portland.
