A minute silence was held for Jonathon Steele who passed away earlier this month. Our deepest sympathies to Probian Gwen - also Susan and Rod and extended family.

President Mary was delighted to present 20 year badges to Helen Watts and Les Sumner - congratulations to them both on 20 years membership of Cobden Probus.

Also Kevin Duffin received his past president’s badge.

Our guest speaker for May was Kate Makin, Corangamite shire mayor, who spoke about the Shire and what is happening within our shire, and the councils 2040 vision for future planning of growth, liveability, agriculture, housing and assisting the growth and prosperity of our shire.

Kate said the main industry was agriculture with a shire total population of 16,115 people and a $2.72 billion economic output.

Kate spoke how the increase of planting of Blue Gums throughout Heytesbury Shire is affecting the dairying industry.

Blue Gums mean less land for dairying and employment.

Kate also discussed Carbon Credits and that they should stay in Australia and not go overseas.

She then went on to describe the future planning of each town in the shire — the development of land around the Simpson and Timboon for housing. Kate explained 4000 workers come into the shire to work each day and subsequently wages aren’t spent within the shire towns.

Kate also spoke about the increasing number of wind farms.

It was an extremely interesting talk on shire budgets and decreasing land usage for dairying which is the major industry within our shire of Corangamite.

All members thoroughly enjoyed this informative talk.

A reminder for Thursday, May 23, a visit to Adam Higham’s bike shop to see the renovations and plans taking place. Following on to Lake Edge for lunch.

Our next meeting is Thursday, June 13 with sergeant Craig Jenkins talking on the recent Scams and how to safe guard ourselves from these crimes. All most welcome to attend.
