Cobden Probus Club Notes

COBDEN Probus Club had 36 members and seven apologies for its June meeting.

By wd-news

A minute silence was held for Helen Watts. who sadly passed away.

Helen was a much-valued member of Cobden Probus for over 20 years - Helen always greeted us with a smile as we entered our meetings.

All members wish to extend our sympathy to Jan, Karen, Gary, Trudy and extended families.

R.I.P. Helen - you will be greatly missed.

Our guest speaker for June was Sgt Craig Jenkins from Cobden Police— speaking on scams.

Sgt Jenkins spoke of the area covered by Cobden Police, and they are also “Backup” for Camperdown, Terang, Pt. Campbell and Timboon when required.

Their police work varies with many different ways of protecting our community.

They do their work in arresting the criminals - but it’s the courts that bail them out.

Sgt Jenkins spoke of the scams in and around Cobden which are becoming quite frequent.

These scams come through text messages, phone calls and access on computers.

There are many different scams that can affect anybody; at any time of the day or night.

Australia is the third most scammed country in the world, in 2021 over $72 million dollars have been scammed.

These tech savvy criminals have targeted all walks of life, e.g. the vulnerable - elderly people and even the everyday person with these “rich quick schemes”.

There is a saying “if it’s sounds too good to be true, it usually is”.

Sgt Jenkins’ advice is never click on unknown links - and never give out banking details or passwords - and he reminded us to take care and to protect ourselves, because scammers have a range of ways to try to access our computers.

Once they gain access it can become very traumatic for families.

Sgt Jenkins offered assistance for anyone and told us how to protect ourselves.

E Safety Australia. I.D Care - Cyber Support are there to help.

A small gift of appreciation to Sgt Jenkins for giving up his time and sharing his knowledge regarding these issues.

Our next meeting is Thursday, July 11, at 10am at the Heytesbury Room of the Cobden Civic Hall.
