Coke takes squash title

THE penultimate round of the Terang Squash Club season last week saw team Coke walk away premiers in a nail-biting final.

Coke defeated Raspberry 137-129 on countback which saw Nathan Glennen, Gavin Simpson, Ricky Bellman and Brad Holmes (sub Katelyn Loft and Kate Justin) emerge as the pennant winning team.

Terang Squash Club member Mark Smith said the final was a thrilling conclusion to the 2023 pennant.

“It was a good final, all had good matches and fought to the end, with some of the matches going five games,” he said.

“They all put in a gallant effort but there is only one winner on the day, unfortunately.”

Smith said the season, overall, had been a success for the club.

“It went very well – we’ve had a few new faces through the door including some from another club so they were happy to come over and play,” he said.

“Membership has been steady with around 30 players, which is up from where it has been in previous years.

“It’s good to have those numbers.”

Members enjoyed an end of pennant break up last Friday evening at the Middle Hotel in Terang, enjoying a night of friendship after a competitive pennant.

Smith said the social aspect of the game was a highlight for members each year who enjoyed the opportunity to compete while building stronger connections with others.

“It’s all friendly, with everyone offering tips and talking about ways to improve,” he said.

“There’s always someone there to give guidance.”

In 2024 the Terang Squash Club will be adding further come and try days in hopes of encouraging members of the community to come along and give the sport a try.

“It’s just for people to come and try,” Smith said.

“In early January we’re looking to add some come and try days on a Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Everyone is welcome to give the game a try, you might be surprised by how much you enjoy the game.”
