Come ‘bawk’ at this!

TRAVELLERS along the Princes Highway may have done a bit of a double-take last Friday when they spotted a giant chicken staring at them.

“Must lay big eggs”: One family farm has gotten creative in promoting their business, with a giant chicken statue in their front paddock.

The chicken statue is located on the end paddock of Compadre Farm in Gnotuk, and was a chance find for the Pyle family.

Compadre Farm owner Ash Pyle said their pasture-raised egg farm idea began in September 2023, and they were looking for a way to promote their business.

“We were driving through Camperdown and I spotted the chicken in Laurie Voutier’s yard,” he said.

“We had a chat with Laurie and told him our plans and he was more than happy to let us have it.

“Getting it up on the farm took some effort.

“We had a couple of people help us; Les and Gavin Mulholland from just up the road – Les brought his manitou and we were able to use that to get it down here and lift it up, Mick Allardyce helped put the wings on and helped coordinate it to put it all together for us.”

The chicken is still in need of some finishing touches, including a new paint job, but has already started catching the interest of passers-by.

Mr Pyle said his family was “really happy” to have the giant chicken set up.

“It definitely stands out. It’ll draw a crowd, I think,” he said.

“It’ll draw some eyes to our business too, which is Compadre Farm - we do pasture-raised eggs and grass-fed and finished beef boxes.

“Future plans are to turn the old dairy into a farm shop to sell our produce.

“Our goal is to give the animals a better way of life, as natural as can be and offer a better product at the end of the life cycle.”
