CAMPERDOWN Model Aircrafts Club is holding its 50th anniversary Fun Fly this weekend at the Camperdown Racecourse.

The event will include flyers from various across Victoria, and the public are invited to head along and watch the models take flight.

The club started in 1972 by John Highland, and has experienced highs and lows over the years.

Participants are expected to be arriving on Friday in preparation for the event, which will begin at 9am on Saturday, February 25.

Club safety officer Foster Taylor said previous fun flys have been well received, but the challenge has been reaching the public.

“We’re here, and there’s a lot of people who drive past and they have no idea that we fly here,” he said.

“We thought this year that Brendan, our secretary, could put it out on Facebook.

“It’s had 1500 hits; it’s a phenomenal number.”

Mr Taylor believes the event will help bring people into the town.

“It’s good that it brings people to the town for the weekend,” he said.

“The traders benefit, the accommodation people benefit, so that’s the good side of it.”

Club member Ray McCraw said it is a great spectacle.

“People don’t just fly around; they do all sorts of aerobatics,” he said.

“Because COVID locked us all up, people are anxious to come out to see something new and to see something different.

“People don’t see little planes flying around-ever.”

Mr Taylor invites the community not to just come and watch the event, but to also come and have a chat with members of the model aircraft club.

Entry is $10 per pilot, and food and drink will be available at the event.

Mr McCraw hopes to see the community attend the fun fly.

“Come along and see the best flyers in Victoria,” he said.
