Comeback win for Lismore-Derri

LISMORE Derrinallum’s A-grade netballers were able to hold their nerve to fight back against a tough Caramut side over the weekend.

The Demons emerged 41-38 winners in what coach Lauren McLennan said started out as an even, physical match-up.

“We knew that’s what it was going to be and we were looking forward to the challenge,” she said.

“It was good to see how we play that one-on-one style.

“It was close throughout the whole game with only a few goals between both teams.

“It was anyone’s game but our fitness, which we’ve been working on since pre-season last November to have our full squad on the court, kind of helped with composure towards the end and led us to the four points.”

McLennan said the defensive players had shown their ability to step up to a tall task.

“They were able to read the flow of the game and spin it off to convert,” she said.

“Our goal shooter, Anita Burchell, was able to capitalise when it came back from the defensive end.”

Heading in to this week’s at-home match up with Penshurst, McLennan wants to see her side play to a consistent level against a squad which has given them a bit of trouble in recent games.

“We want to keep within a few goals because over the years it’s been a mindset issue with Penshurst,” she said.

“They tend to rattle us and I think we’ve rattled them as well, so we’ll need to play a full four quarters of netball and not get caught up in what will be a rushed game.

“We want to stick tight one-on-one and get our hands up over everything to try and take over space.

“Last game we gave our opponents a bit too much run on so if we can keep our hands up and play a solid 60 minutes, we should be able to keep that intensity up and breathe when we can.”
