Community helps celebrate milestone

OLD friends were reunited over the weekend, with BlazeAid volunteers holding their 10th reunion in Cobden.
Former Cobden BlazeAid camp co-ordinator Christine Male, who led the camp for the more than nine months volunteers were needed in the area following the St Patrick’s Day fires, was pleased with the weekend.
“It was a resounding success,” she said.
“The weather was even kind to us. We had about 100 people each day.”
Mrs Male said the weekend was an opportunity to celebrate the friendships formed following the fires.
“There was a happy energy (on the weekend from attendees); there was lots of friendships renewed,” she said.
“It was lovely to catch up with people.
“Thank you to everyone who assisted when we were in town and made it possible to have such a great venue and so much support.”
In the time stationed at Cobden, volunteers were kept busy, with 116 registered properties in need of assistance.
When added up the statistics left no shadow of a doubt just how much of an impact BlazeAid volunteers had on the recovery process.
Across the Cobden camp 669 registered volunteers completed 5600 volunteer days at properties impacted during the fires.
The average length of volunteer stay was 20 days and the average age of volunteers was 68.
