COBDEN local residents John and Jenny Baker and daughter Lauren and her husband John Moorfield received a surprise recently.

They received local business vouchers as a thank you for going out of their way to pick up the roadside rubbish that was recently illegally dumped.

Corangamite Shire councillor Jo Beard had received complaints rubbish was strewn across the roadside edges including a two seater couch and had notified VicRoads as the road managers.

The rubbish was dumped after the trailer it was loaded in was stolen from within the Cobden township with the offenders offloading the unwanted rubbish as they made their getaway.

Locals had been awaiting VicRoads to collect the rubbish off the roadside however due to delays following the recent weather events, VicRoads team were unable to collect it promptly.

In this time, the Baker and Moorfield families, who live nearby, took it upon themselves to gather the unsightly rubbish and clean up the roadside.

“The majority of people typically would drive past, assuming someone else would deal with it, however they significantly went out of their way to deal with rubbish that wasn’t their own for the benefit of the community,” CrBeard said.

“This just reminds me how we have so many incredible people within our community and this selfless act deserves to be recognised.”

As a result of the Cobden Business Network’s Kindness Campaign which recently received grant funding from the Australian Government in partnership with the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and the South West Community Foundation, Cr Beard and Cobden’s business and economic development consultant Laura Hultgren were able to recognise both families by providing them with local business vouchers to say thank you.
