CAMPERDOWN’S senior footballers sit just half a game out of the top five following last weekend’s loss to top side South Warrnambool.

Now in seventh, half a game behind Port Fairy and the fifth-placed Cobden Bombers, the Magpies will be looking to add to their tally in the run home to finals.

Facing the in-form Roosters at Friendlies Society last Saturday, the Magpies found themselves scoreless after the opening term and went into the main break 24-points down.

A quiet second half saw the Magpies restricted to just one major while the Roosters piled on four goals.

Final scores were South Warrnambool 10.11.71 to Camperdown 3.8.26.

Best for the Magpies were Brendan Richardson, Hamish Sinnott, Charlie Lucas, Riley Arnold, Brayden Draffin and William Rowbottom.

Hamish Sinnott kicked two goals while Zach Sinnott added one.

Senior coach Neville Swayn said while his side always expected a tough game against the Roosters, they were optimistic they could “get the job done.”

“It was always going to be a big ask against the ladder leaders; South really are the yardstick for the league and I think they’ll be hard to beat through the back half of the year and into finals.

“We didn’t score in the first quarter while the Roosters piled on five goals so that proved costly in the end – we were playing catch up from there.”

With the Hampden ladder tight from second through to eighth, Swayn believes you can “throw a blanket over all those sides in the run home”.

“Our next four-week block is huge; after this weekend’s bye round we’ll face North then Warrnambool, Cobden and Koroit so if we can win three of those that’ll set us up well.”

Swayn is confident the Magpies’ depth will see them over the line against North next week (having beaten them at Bushfield earlier in the season).

He also hopes to see the return of Cameron Spence and Shane Morgan for round 12.

“The bye round (tomorrow) will see interleague played and as a club we congratulate our players who have made the Hampden squads (with the final teams announced late last night),” Swayn said.

“Hamish and Zac Sinnott, and Syd Bradshaw were all named in the under 23 squad while Jonty Lafferty, Myles Sinnott and Luke Kavenagh were all listed in the under 17 squad which is a great effort by them all.”

Camperdown’s reserves remain in the hunt for win number two this season following a 99-point loss to the Roosters.

Final scores were South Warrnambool 15.22.112 to Camperdown 2.1.13.

Tim Fitzgerald and Tarkyn Love kicked a goal each while Brock Stephens, Luke Kavenagh, Devon Coates, Love and Eddie Baker were named best for the Magpies.

Earlier in the day, Camperdown’s under 18.5s found the going tough against the Roosters, with final scores South Warrnambool 14.9.93 to Camperdown 1.1.7.

Best for the Magpies were Tarkyn Love, Wilba Cheeseman, Isaac Winsall, Brock Stephens (one goal), Luke Kavenagh and Logan Mahony.
