Costly second quarter
A SECOND quarter lapse proved costly for the Magpies in their clash with Warrnambool last weekend.

A SECOND quarter lapse proved costly for the Magpies in their clash with Warrnambool last weekend.
According to Camperdown senior coach Neville Swayn, the Pies started strong and went into the quarter-time break with a handy five-point lead.
However, a lapse in concentration in the second term proved costly, with the Magpies only adding nine points to their tally for the term while the Blues slotted nine majors.
“After being up after the first quarter we found ourselves down by 38-points at the main break which was disappointing,” Swayn said.
“Reflecting on the game, that second quarter basically lost us the game.
“But in saying that, we’re on the right track it’s just a shame we only have two games to go.”
Swayn said he was pleased with the way his side responded in the second half, which resulted in 15 more inside 50s, however they failed to convert on several opportunities.
“Earlier in the season we would have struggled in our second-half response so Saturday’s effort was great to see.
“Warrnambool is a good side and we managed to finish strong. It’s important to run out games and we did that.”
Final scores on Saturday were Camperdown 12.13.85 to Warrnambool 17.14.116.
Best players for the Magpies were Charlie Lucas, Zach Sinnott, Cameron Spence, Joshua Place, Luke O’Neil and Angus Gordon.
Goals went to Tim Fitzgerald (4), Sam Gordon (4), Luke Molan, Brayden Draffen, Judah Dundon and Luke O’Neil.
The day also marked the 80th anniversary of Kokoda.
In recognition, the seniors wore a specially-designed jumper which featured the names of local soldiers who were part of the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion, which held the strategic village of Kokoda from the Japanese forces advancing on New Guinea during the Second World War on August 8,1942.
The senior and reserves teams also took part in a commemorative service on the day.
In the reserves game, Camperdown went down by 29 points, 3.10.28 to 8.9.57.
Among the best players were Eddie Lucas, Nelson Loader, Leigh Ball, Ned Payne, Issac Fowler and Henry Green.
Goals went to Andrew Anderson (2) and Jordan Riches.
Camperdown will head to Melville Oval this weekend to take on the Hamilton Kangaroos.
Swayn believes the game will be a “winnable” one for the Magpies and is looking forward to the challenge.
“Hamilton on their home ground are always tough but I’m confident we can give them a good run,” Swayn said.
“They’re coming off an eight-goal loss to Cobden so will be just as hungry as us for a win. We definitely give ourselves a chance.”
