Council approves new vision for Terang
CORANGAMITE Shire Council has adopted a new development plan for residential growth in Terang
The Terang Development Plan 2023 was put before council at this week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council to provide a long-term strategic planning framework and road layout for the proposed residential precinct between McRae Street, Littles Lane and the rail line.
The newly revised plan includes a mix of lot sizes to compliment the urban/rural transition, road layout, improvements to public spaces and a vision for a future local park.
The plan emphasises design principals of enhancing character, liveability and sustainability, and supporting a connected neighbourhood.
Corangamite Shire Council received five submissions following the public consultation period, with concerns voiced around the need for traffic and stormwater management upgrades on McCrae Street, traffic volumes on Noel Street, a lack of footpaths on the existing streets and concern for existing landowners and overdevelopment.
Cr Geraldine Conheady said she was pleased to see the plan before council.
“This strategic planning is doing what we promised to do in our council plan to support growth and diversify housing options, and this is a really good outcome for Terang,” she said.
“There is such demand for housing in the current climate that this review is vital and very timely,
“It anticipates need, it recognises and supports the opportunity to unlock residential housing land supply in this precinct of Terang, which is already zoned residential, and identified as a growth area.
“This is a great opportunity for us which prepares diverse new housing options, and the research layout reflects more modern expectations of what new residential layout should look like.”
Cr Conheady stressed the development plan was merely the framework for a long-term vision if and when landowners chose to sell or subdivide, with no development currently in the works.
Deputy mayor Laurie Hickey said the plan provided a “robust overview” of how the shire could address the pressing need of growth.
“The McCrae Street development plan is very good,” he said.
“It is what we need within our Corangamite Shire - the development of residential land for future generations.
“This is a fabulous plan and I have no hesitation in supporting the recommendation.”
The plan was unanimously adopted by councillors.
