Encouraging people to speak: Corangamite Shire Council mayor Ruth Gstrein raised the orange flag to mark 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

The flag was raised on Monday, with members of the community gathering near the Courthouse for the event.

The campaign began on November 25, which marked International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and will continue until Human Rights Day on December 10.

Mayor Ruth Gstrein asked residents to work together year-round, not just during the campaign, to change the story about violence against women.

“Statistics show one in four women have experienced intimate partner violence, so we all know someone who is going through this, and alarmingly on average, one Australian women every 10 days is killed by a man they know,” she said.

“I also acknowledge that men can also experience violence at the hands of their partners and we can’t ignore the ongoing physical and mental wellbeing of children who witness this behaviour.

“I ask everyone not to look the other way but to call out violent behaviour and create a future where everybody is safe, equal and respected.”
