A SUSPECTED failure in auto navigation is believed to be the cause behind a Tesla ploughing into Camperdown Quality Meats this morning.

The incident happened at around 2am this morning.

Police believe the Tesla attempted to cross Manifold Street from Cressy Street through to Leura Street with auto navigation on.

The vehicle’s system was believed to have failed to register the turn, causing the Tesla to crash.

The driver was believed to have suffered minor injuries.

Camperdown State Emergency Service (SES) unit controller Michael Carman said two SES units, two Country Fire Authority Units and ambulance and police had attended the scene to reports a male was trapped.

He said the fact the incident involved a Tesla proposed a unique challenge.

“It was a learning curve, we had to learn how to isolate power source,” he said.

“The CFA set up in case the car caught fire, but we had a couple of strategies in place for that.

“We basically set about trying to secure the premises for morning.”

Mr Carman said the building had sustained significant damage, which responding units had attempted too temporarily secure.

“The big front window was smashed and the wall was smash in as well,” he said.

“The verandah beam was broken, but we were able to temporarily secure that.”
