Key data: Corangamite Shire Council approved a flooding survey along the Curdies River at last month’s council meeting.

The study will determine flood levels and extents for a range of flood events in the catchment, including riverine, flash, and overland flooding.

Shire community safety and resilience co-ordinator Belinda Bennett said the flood study will undertake modelling to define flood levels and extents for different rainfall events and assess the potential impact of flooding on properties, roads and other assets.

Outputs from the flood study will include:

  • Digital maps and spatial databases to define flood levels and extents, velocities, depths and flood risks;

  • Flood Intelligence and warning report and maps to identify flood impacts on properties and roads;

  • Animations of flood progressions to assist with emergency planning; and

  • Flood damages and mitigation report that estimates the flood damage costs and assesses structural flood mitigation options.

“The flood study will help reduce flood risks (at both individual and community level) by reducing threat to life and property and flood-related damages in the catchment,” Ms Bennett said.

A tender process for the flood study received four submissions.

Corangamite Shire Council voted to award the tender to Water Technology at a cost of $319,540.

Ms Bennett said council had a budget of $320,000 to deliver this project which includes a $140,000 grant from Emergency Management Victoria, $120,000 from Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action via the Corangamite Catchment Authority (CMA) and $60,000 from council’s 2024/25 budget.

Coastal Ward councillor Jamie Vogels was pleased to support the project.

“It will be very handy information for the Curdies,” he said.

“I think this is a good thing moving forward, as floods will be a big issue.”

Cr Jo Beard said it was not possible for council to do these kinds of projects on its own.

“It’s great to see that we’ve got a significant partnership,” she said.

“It will be a great detailed report and it’s a pile of information that a lot of people will find beneficial.”
