CAMPERDOWN’S junior cyclists braved wet conditions for their final race of the season last Thursday night.

Eleven starters, across four age groups, contested the age championship races followed by a presentation night at the Hampden Hotel.

Zane Vogels was victorious in the club’s summer season aggregate award, finishing on 40 points to win by just one point over Josh Thompson on 39.

Third place went to Quinn Clark on 38, followed by Ava Cunningham and Lawson Clark equal fourth on 36 points.

Points are scored each week as follows: winner five points; second four points; third three points; fourth two points and one point for participation each week.

With races handicapped to try and give all riders an equal chance of winning, consistently showing up each week certainly effects rider’s point tallies.

With Zane travelling from Scott’s Creek each week to compete this was a great reward for his dedication.

Lawson Clark won the encouragement award for his determination and persistence in showing up despite it requiring him to manage his asthma.

Lawson consistently gives it his all despite different conditions each week effecting his ability to breath properly (such as the pollen count and weather).

Camperdown Junior Cycling will return when daylight savings returns.

The club encourages juniors and seniors interested in bike riding to think about joining.

Riders can start off on a mountain bike and be handicapped accordingly or the club has some small junior bikes (to suit 8-10 year-olds) and medium size junior bikes for children to borrow.

Riders must be eight years of age to compete.

Club members are always keen to help new members with getting on a suitable bike and senior riders ride with juniors, giving them tips and helping them stay safe during the road race which takes

place Thursdays during daylight savings (5pm for 5.30pm start).

Given cyclists are handicapped according to ability it does not matter if they are a slow rider or vying to be the next Grace Brown everyone can participate and the improvement across the season is incredible.

This season the junior committee ran a total of 22 races with 18 junior cyclists competing.

The Camperdown Cycling Club extends its thanks to David Stephens for volunteering as tail car and for all the parents who assist each week with driving the lead car, looking out for vehicles at the start, providing first aide, assisting with recording times, handicapping and riding with children.
