Dean Saunders named ambassador
TERANG’S Dean Saunders has been named the ambassador of this year’s Noorat to Terang Fun Run and Walk – which will see the long-awaited introduction of an all abilities section.
The Terang and District Lions Club this week announced plans to introduce the inaugural Terang Lions All Abilities 700 metre section at this year’s Fun Run – ensuring everyone has an opportunity to take part in the beloved community event.
The introduction of the section had been inspired when members reflected on a milestone for Terang’s Dean Saunders, who this year celebrates 40 years since he first took part in the event.
Not only did he continue to participate – he amassed an incredible 14 wins in the section.
“We felt it was time to formally introduce an all abilities section,” Terang Lions Club member Stephen O’Connor said.
“We got thinking about what Dean had achieved, knowing it had been 40 years since he took part in the Fun Run, as he was pushed by his father, Gary, in a wheelchair.
“Dean went on to win the wheelchair section 14 times, so it was clear we needed an all abilities section.”
“Dean showed this event is achievable for anyone who wants to participate, we felt his achievements showed what is possible.
“His father designed a light-weight wheelchair which allowed him to compete, and it was a pretty good effort to win it 14 times.”
The milestone made for the perfect opportunity for the club to introduce another first for the event – the naming of an event ambassador.
Given the inspiration he’d already provided, Mr O’Connor said Dean Saunders quickly became the favourite to serve as the inaugural Terang and District Lions Noorat to Terang Fun Run and Walk ambassador.
“We were really excited when he agreed to be the ambassador,” he said.
“We were so chuffed – especially because we’ve never had an ambassador before.
“It’s really nice to have a local – everyone in the community knows Dean.”
A beaming Mr Saunders couldn’t hide the smile when discussing his role as the event’s ambassador and recounting the memories of being pushed in past events by his dad.
He acknowledged it was a good feeling to be involved as the inaugural ambassador for the historic event.
But the count may not stop at 14 victories – Mr Saunders revealed plans are already underway for him to participate once again.
The 2025 Terang and District Lions Noorat to Terang Fun Run and Walk will return on Friday, February 28.
Runners and walkers will start at the traditional spot on Terang-Mortlake Road, opposite the Noorat Post Office, with the walkers leaving from 6.30pm and the runners from 6.45pm.
The all abilities 700 metre event will start from 6.30pm at the Railway Line in Thompson Street, finishing at the Terang Returned and Services sub-branch Hall on Shadforth Street.
Entry is $5, with each all abilities competitor to receive a bag and hat for their participation.
Mr O’Connor appealed for any members of the community who could volunteer on the night to get in touch, as the addition of the all abilities section could stretch thin the numbers for Lions members.
“We’re putting out a plea for extra help because our Lions numbers aren’t as great as they used to be,” he said.
“It’ll take a little more work this year, which is fine, but we want to make sure everything runs smooth so we’ll need some extra help.
“All are welcome to volunteer, and anyone can contact me on 0407 954 257.”
