Deep Lake algae discussed
A MEETING was held at Derrinallum’s Deep Lake last Wednesday to discuss the persisting blue-green algae bloom.

The meeting on July 19 discussed the need for better site signage and broader waterbody blue-green algae information to be available on the website.
The group discussed historical information around blue-green algae occurrences and durations.
They will continue to monitor blue-green algae impacts and consider possible solutions as information is further analysed.
Wannon Water has taken another water sample from Deep Lake, and test results are expected this week.
A DEECA spokesperson said the meeting discussed the response to the bloom, and opportunities for more information.
“Our lakes are valuable to our local communities as well as the committees of management that plan and run recreational events on lakes across Barwon South West,” they said.
“Blue-green algae occurrences can prevent these events happening due to public safety.”
Warning signs have been installed at the site and authorities are reminding people to avoid direct contact with the water until the algal bloom disperses.
Direct contact with blue-green algae can cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes or itchiness. If swallowed, it can cause gastroenteritis, nausea, or vomiting.
Recreational activities at the lake should be avoided, including swimming, fishing, and boating.
Anyone who comes into contact with water from the lake should immediately wash in fresh water and seek medical advice if they experience any illness.
Any fish harvested from the lake must have the gills and guts removed prior to cooking.
DEECA will continue monitoring Deep Lake until the bloom disperses and advise when the lake is safe for use again.
