Demons back in the win column
TIMBOON’S senior footballers tallied their second win over the season with a 17-point victory of South Rovers on the weekend.
The first quarter saw South Rovers race out to a 15-point lead despite solid chances from both sides, with the home side’s accuracy securing a 3.1.19 lead over the Demons with just four behinds.
Coach Marcus Hickey said his players had stayed confident, knowing they had squandered some scoring chances they would normally capitalise on and approaching the second quarter with a belief their best football was yet to come.
“We were probably not as switched on as we could have been, and they jumped on us,” he said.
“We did not want to get too frustrated because there were three set shots which we knew we should have kicked.
“We were not going to panic, we knew we had plenty of the play but just hadn’t converted early.”
The second quarter prooved far more favourable for the visitors, however, the score narrowed to just eight thanks to three goals splitting the middle.
“We were just able to snip at it and lift our pressure,” Hickey said.
“To the boys’ credit they kept their composure and things started to turn.”
After the half, the Demons found their form to boot four in both the third and fourth quarters, while restricting South Rovers to just 13 points in each quarter.
“The game broke open in the second half and we were able to play a bit more footy on our terms,” Hickey said.
Final score Timboon Demons 11.10.76 defeated South Rovers 9.5.59.
“We’re really happy with the win,” coach Marcus Hickey said.
Best players for the Demons were Luke Smith, Darcy Bridgewater, Ben Newey, Mitchell Wallace, Ash Hunt and Balun Cumming.
Marcus Hickey and Mitchell Gristede led the scoring with two each, while Charlie Trotter, Ash Hunt, Rhys Zieglaar, Kyle Delaney, Ben Newey, Thomas Hunt and Eban White each kicked a goal.
“Ash Hunt and Luke Smith were strong in defence, while Oliver Stansfield and Darcy Bridgewater collectively played a defensive role in the midfield which put a bit of a clamp on a couple of their good players,” Hickey said.
“That allowed guys like Ben Newey and Mitch Wallace to go on the attack, knowing we had guys set up defensively.”
The Demons have the bye this week and will use their time resting up ahead of a tall task of travelling to Allansford to take on the second placed Cats.
“They’re one of the in-form teams of the competition,” Hickey said.
“We’ll want to set up defensively sound and try to back ourselves when we get a chance.”
Meanwhile in the reserves, South Rovers ran out 38-point winners to defeat the Demons 8.9.57 to 2.7.19.
Best for Timboon were Henry Stansfield, Will Moorhouse, Rangi Vickers, Richie Moorhouse, Bayley Kelly and Bailey Delaney.
Robert Matthews and Bailey Delaney each contributed a goal.
Timboon’s A grade netballers are eyeing a blockbuster this weekend after securing a nail-biting victory over South Rovers.
The Demons took down South Rovers in a thrilling 52-50 victory in a back and forth affair.
Laura Rosolin led the scoring with 29, while Macy Gale tallied 22.
Timboon is set to travel to Allansford for their next match in what will be a showdown contest to move up the ladder.
The Demons currently sit strong in fifth place, but a win over the third-place Cats could see the positions flipped.
