Demons close in on ladder leaders

LISMORE Derrinallum’s senior footballers last weekend showed they have what it takes to match it with Mininera League powerhouse, Tatyoon.
Aside from a short lapse in the first quarter, the Demons stayed within two goals of the Hawks for much of Saturday’s game.
“I was thrilled with the way they all played, we had 21 contributors on the weekend,” coach Alec Wiltshire said.
“We had a brief lapse in the first quarter, which allowed Taty to kick a few quick goals and we had to play catch up from then.
“And that’s always going to be a big task against such quality opposition but to the boys’ credit they really fought it out and showed they’ve got what it takes to beat Tatyoon.”
Wiltshire said playing Taty on their home ground also added to the challenge.
“They really know how to defend their home ground but our back six really held up well. We just need to find that extra five or 10 per cent and I believe we can beat them.”
Wiltshire said while it was difficult for his side to make up for its brief lapse in the first, he praised all 21 players for putting in 110 per cent and playing four quarters of solid footy.
“We can certainly take a lot of positives from this game. Our boys have got a spring in their steps and are working hard towards the end goal.
“We have finals in our sights but there’s still seven rounds to go so we’ll take every week as it comes.”
The end of the first quarter saw the Demons down 3.1.19 to 6.6.42 but a second quarter lift got them within 18 points going into the main break.
They then added five goals, one behind in the second half while Tatyoon scored four goals, eight.
Final scores: Lismore Derrinallum 12.4.76 to Tatyoon 13.17.95.
Best for the Demons were Brodie Doolan, Lachlan Ibister, Jack Atkins, Liam Rigby, Michael Lockyer and Charlie Brett.
Goals went to Michael Lockyer (4), Riley Browne (3), Liam Rigby (2), Hayden Brett and Beau Ketchen.
The Demons currently sit third on the ladder, two games behind both Tatyoon and ladder leaders Ararat – and one game ahead of fourth placed Woorndoo Mortlake.
Lismore Derrinallum’s reserves struggled against ladder leaders Tatyoon, going down by 51 points.
Final scores: Lismore Derrinallum 5.3.33 to Tatyoon 12.12.84.
Best players for the Demons were Ryan Jeffrey, Stephn Parr, Shannon Berriman, Jayden Brewer, Warrick Miller and Kelly Brain.
Goals: Clint Dudman, Matthew Levings, Ryan Marquand, Lachlan Nelson and Stephen Walters.
Lismore Derrinallum currently sits second on the reserves ladder, one game behind top-of-the-table Tatyoon and two games clear of third-placed Woorndoo Mortlake.
The Demons will this Saturday face SMW Rovers at Lismore.
